The female kangaroo hopped over her handlers late on Thursday during a rest stop at the Oshawa Zoo and Fun Farm in Ontario, the park's supervisor and head keeper, Cameron Preyde, told CBC. Officers on patrol spotted the kangaroo at around 3 a.m. on Monday on a rural property in northern Oshawa, Staff Sergeant Chris Boileau told CBC Toronto. The kangaroo punched one of the officers in the face during the capture, Boileau said. "It's something that he and his platoon mates will be remembering for the rest of their careers," he told CBC Toronto. The kangaroo, which was en route to a zoo in Quebec, received medical treatment and will stay at the Oshawa Zoo for a few days of rest, Preyde said.

TORONTO (AP) — Canadian autoworkers have voted to ratify a three-year contract agreement with General Motors. Workers would get 10% in general pay raises in the first year, with 2% in the second and 3% in the third. The company also agreed to restore cost-of-living pay raises starting in December of 2024. Temporary workers would get pay raises, and those with at least one year of service would get permanent jobs. Canadian union Unifor said Tuesday afternoon the "strike actions are on hold to allow the membership to vote on the tentative agreement." Unifor initiated a national strike after the sides failed to reach a deal by an 11:59 p.m. Monday deadline. The Canadian engine plant marked a major concern for the automaker, which also is facing U.S. strikes by the United Auto Workers union. Unifor said the tentative deal with GM follows a ratified agreement reached last month with Ford Motor.

GM on Tuesday said it will build a 1.1-million-square-foot expansion of the its Brookville, Ohio, diesel engine facility and install new technology and equipment, more than quadrupling the current size of the facility, which produces Duramax diesel engines for the Chevrolet Silverado HD and the GMC Sierra HD. GM declined to release "product details and timing related to its "future HD truck powertrain products." GM also announced C$280 million ($210 million) in its Canadian Oshawa Assembly and $632 Million in Fort Wayne, Indiana, for future next-generation ICE full-size trucks. GM did not post an announcement on its website about the $920 million Ohio investment, but sent a press release to Reuters after Senator Sherrod Brown, of Ohio, issued a statement touting the plan.

This should enable the automaker to reap tens of billions of dollars in additional profit, according to Reuters estimates, before it shifts completely to zero-emission electric vehicles in 2035. It never said when exactly it would stop producing gasoline-powered trucks and SUVs, though suppliers and analysts expected it would be well before 2035. GM plans to run its heavy-duty combustion pickups at both plants until 2035, according to AFS, which provides data and analysis to vehicle manufacturers and suppliers. The automaker will gradually reduce annual production of its big SUVs in Arlington as it begins to introduce new electric companions, starting around mid-decade.
